Athar Jamal
He is an artist in the classic tradition. He is an exponent of spontaneous, on-spot painting and for years he has made a practice of moving around the country, sketching and painting landscape views and scenes from life.He is renowned for the Thar series, in which he has documented the costumes, homes and customs of the ancient Thar region of Pakistan that maintains the traditions of an ancient culture. In his work, the geometrically inclined vertical and horizontal planes of the surface of his paintings are juxtaposed with the soft-edged form and drapery of the subject. Jamal makes frequent trips to the area where people go about their work while he quietly sketches and paints. Focusing on the figure as the subject of the painting, his figure studies are dramatic renderings of shades. . His work has been exhibited in Europe, the UK and Asian countries as well as cities of Pakistan. His work is included in the collection of Maritime Museum, Karachi, The National Defence College, Islamabad and the Presidency as well as numerous private collections.
